Accent walls... or not?

Recently a client asked me about accent walls. He was not the first. And of course I had thoughts. He may not be the only one wondering if that one red wall is doing you any favors when it comes time to sell. It's not.

In case you are also curious, here's my answer!

Hint: we'll also chat wallpaper and color drenching.

In my opinion, a space rarely looks bigger because one wall is painted differently, and looking bigger is almost always the goal with resale.

While occasionally an accent wall can be a good idea, one wall painted a darker color is a dated concept. A more modern way to do an accent wall is with wallpaper or a different material, not just paint. This concept I love, but in most homes it is too taste specific for resale and not worth the seller's money.

Spruce is one of my favorite design blogs and here’s an article they recently did on accent walls. Again, this isn’t something I would recommend for resale but more for interior design: https://www.thespruce.com/are-accent-walls-out-of-style-8722457

Really popular right now is color drenching where everything including the trim and sometimes even the ceiling is painted the same color, often a dark jewel tone or moody color. This is best for interior design, not for resale. What's color drenching?

Sometimes, the seller will not be painting an existing (colorful!) space. If you need me to stage a color drenched space, I'm there for it!
